Submission on Gene Technology Bill

17 February 2025

New Zealand researchers are currently investigating how to develop a genetically altered wasp that could be used to destroy wasp colonies (Sid Mosdell, Flickr).

The Commissioner has made a submission on the Gene Technology Bill to the Health select committee. While generally supportive of the Bill, he has suggested several recommendations to ensure that it is fit for purpose. These include:

  • ensuring that New Zealand’s indigenous flora, fauna and ecosystems are adequately considered in risk assessments when environmental release is planned
  • expanding the right of review of decisions relating to genetically modified organisms to those who will face risks, for example commercial or environmental groups
  • ensuring the independence of the gene technology regulator
  • clarifying terminology used by the Bill
  • ensuring that Māori can select their representatives on the advisory committee and that this committee can advise on any proposal that could affect indigenous species
  • seeking further advice to determine if the Bill could cause significant trade issues or risks to industry sector groups.
